Peotone: The Collections
The Dubbert Collection
This artifact is a bit of an unsolved mystery but we thought we would show you the find and just present the facts. Until this piece is examined by several experts we will not know the final facts.

August Dubbert found this artifact on the same hill as his other finds. In my opinion this is not a rock. As an ex-potter I would definitely say that this is clay containing bits of
small pieces of rock and chert material. The red paint could very well be modern as Vern said his father liked painting things, however, the indentations are not modern. A natural
clay pit is located about ¾ of a mile from where this object was found and Peotone even had a tile factory there in the 1800's. Whether this is a clay face effigy or not, it will have to be determined by an archaeologist at a later date, but until then......intriguing and unusual piece.
