The Lab Work
A closeup of one of the washed piles shows you the reange of materials to be found--- 3 kinds of snails, bone, flakes, and, still, a lot of sandy soil. Only the whole, or 3/4 whole,  rabdotus snails are to be counted... the presence and mix of the smaller snails are merely noted. since we believe the rabdotus snails were eaten, noting their densities from level to level gives a rough idea of occupational levels... this, even if few artifacts are found. The smaller snails are ones either attracted to the occupational waste, or ones which were deposited during floods. (It is also possible that some were just cooked along with the rabdotus... easier than serperating them!)  For more information about Texas snails, read Andy Malof's article about rabdotus snails.
