The Wall Profiles and other points of interest

Here is the section of wall behind which we decided to place the first pit, or Unit A.
An explanation of the stratification (written with James G.):
ZONE A
The upper strata (35-40 cm/18 inches) is a dark brown to black topsoil. This layer is recent and shows occasional dips from evident plowing.
ZONE B
This is a lighter colored layer of medium brown to buff sandy sediment, approximately 35cm thick which contains very abundant land snail remains (rabdotus alternatus). These snails were herbivores that fed on local lichen, mold and fungus. There is a fair quantity of burned limestone rock evident in this zone.
ZONE C
Composed of a reddish-brown sandy silt, this layer shows a much smaller number of rabdotus snails. The depth of this layer is not yet known as only a part of it is exposed in the profile.
