The artifacts pictured here have all been recovered from one site and
will be documented with the Illinois Transportation Archaeological Research
Program. The first day that I found the site I filled my pocket with flakes,
chunks, and a few small tools, not knowing that in my pocket was the base
of a Clovis point, pictured in the second row. It wasn’t until
that evening, while cleaning off all the finds, that the overhead light
hit that piece just right and I saw the flute.
Well, I had no reference books on hand, but you can sure bet I got my
hands on one quickly and my suspicions proved to be correct. I put
in a call to Wendy Harris and she drove to Peotone to take a look.
She took examples of chert material back with her for further study and
this site is slated for further study if a proposed airport should go forth.
I saw some green flakes that first time around and wondered what the previous
inhabitants had made from “green rock”.
Well......last Fall I found that Paleo knife made from Attica Chert......question
answered!
